Application engineering
Build and evolve application features, APIs and integrations. Work with existing domain logic, improve test coverage around the changed behavior and keep implementation choices aligned with the product.
Both Systems / Hands-on engineering for your Rails business
Keep your Rails product moving without losing sight of the business it serves. Both Systems offers hands-on application engineering, performance investigation and carefully scoped modernization for companies building and operating Ruby on Rails software.
Discuss your Rails applicationApplication engineering · Measured changes · Direct collaboration
A Rails product carries years of business rules, integrations and operational knowledge. Improving it means understanding that context before changing code, choosing the right intervention and making progress without treating a rewrite as the default answer.
/ Engagement scope
Work is scoped around the application’s current state, the business priority and the change you need—not a generic package of hours or a promised delivery team.
01
Build and evolve application features, APIs and integrations. Work with existing domain logic, improve test coverage around the changed behavior and keep implementation choices aligned with the product.
02
Investigate slow requests, database access and background processing using the evidence available. Identify bottlenecks, implement scoped changes and compare behavior against an agreed baseline rather than promising a fixed speed increase.
03
Assess framework and dependency compatibility, deprecations and test coverage. Plan an upgrade sequence with validation and deployment considerations appropriate to the application.
04
Refactor high-friction areas, reduce unnecessary coupling and address dependency or maintenance issues incrementally. Preserve important business behavior while improving the parts that make future changes harder.
/ Potential deliverables
The scope determines the deliverables. A Rails engagement can include:
/ How the work happens
Discuss the product, versions, deployment process and current pain points. Agree on access, scope and priorities.
Work in focused increments with tests and checks suited to the change. Share progress and surface constraints early.
Document the changes and outstanding concerns. Agree on follow-up maintenance separately, subject to scope and availability.
Work directly with Marcelo Both, founder and senior engineer at Both Systems, with approximately 20 years of experience working with international clients. The person discussing your system is the person doing the work.
Engagements are scoped to one engineer’s capacity. Scope, deliverables and availability are agreed before work begins; ongoing support is not an automatic commitment.

Share the Ruby and Rails versions, the main business concern and what you want to change. Include any timing or deployment constraints so the conversation can focus on a realistic engagement.
